Present in Morocco on the irrigated perimeter of Massa on the Agadir coast, Maraissa began as a Franco-Moroccan partnership between two producers: Jean-Marie Le Gall and Mohamed Tazi. In 1988 the AZURA brand was created, the result of a common desire to share skills, the same vision of the market, and the exchange of production techniques. Since 1988, the tomato has been Azura's star product, developed over the years in a segmentation that respnds to market expectations.

Set up in Morocco near Agadir, Dardour Primeurs has innovative production methods. It is the first Moroccan enterprise to adapt to mainstream European exportation. These days most of its production is sent to the processing industry which assures stability in price terms, by producing all the year round.

In order to alleviate the problems associated with the loss of water in fresh products, the company AIR REFRESHING CONTROL –ARECO– has developed a new hydration technology by means of nebulization, which can be applied at any stage from harvest to the point of sale to the consumer. Glorete Dias, who is responsible for Spain and Portugal at Areco, explains what the system consists of and how it benefits the product.

Mediterranean workshop: “Recycling non-conventional water in protected cultivation”
From 28 April to 1 May, a Mediterranean workshop on new techniques for recycling non-conventional water in protected cultivation was organised by the Hassan II Agronomic and Veterinary Institute (IAV Hassan II) in collaboration with the European Union (EU). The speakers presented about 50 scientific papers to 300 participants coming from a score of different countries. Professor Brahim Hafidi, the director of the IAV Hassan II talked to Tomatoes Today about the use of non-conventional water in agriculture.

Mr. Peter Geerts is the new person on the tomato team in the UK. He joined Syngenta 5 years ago, after working for 8 years in a company where he sold chemicals, fertilisers and substrates directly to professional growers. At Syngenta, he started as a representative with responsibility for tomatoes and lettuce in a small geographical area, but after one year he found himself directing all his attention to tomatoes in a larger area, Belgium, and a small part of the Netherlands close to the Belgian border.
