On 21 May 2009, Syngenta Seeds Vegetables staged its traditional Spring Open Day for producers and technicians from agricultural co-operatives with the aim of promoting tomato varieties for production in short cycles.

“We at Syngenta are committed to short cycle cultivation, since it guarantees top quality production throughout the cycle, while offering the grower an excellent production cost/profitability ratio. We are convinced that short cycle varieties can be as profitable for the grower as long cycle varieties,” said Mr. David Murcia, Product Manager for Tomatoes Iberia at Syngenta Seeds.

The workshop was held at the “Rafael Cantón" Research Centre in El Ejido and it attracted technicians, growers and experts throughout the region. Visitors had the opportunity to observe Syngenta tomato varieties that are already present in the market, such as Daylos, Myla, Tucson, Jawara, Corvey, Torry and 152-277, in addition to the new varieties that the company plans to introduce.

“The experience has been very positive, since we have given growers a broad perspective of Syngenta’s range of tomato varieties at a time when they are making planting decisions for the autumn and winter campaign,” Mr. Murcia commented, highlighting the positive feedback from the event.

With respect to the tomato campaign, Mr. Murcia concluded: “This has been a complicated campaign due to low temperatures and low light levels, especially in the first few months of the year. Prices have been no better than the weather, although in some months, such as April, they did stage a recovery.”
