Tomato pests update: Tuta absoluta, TYLCV and Chlorosis virus

The European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organization (EPPO) has recently disclosed new information about pests in several tomato crops. First reports of Tuta absoluta in Spain and Italy, Tomato chlorosis virus in Brazil and Mauritius, and TYLCV in China and Bangladesh are described hereunder.

Paraguay: Threefold increase in tomato imports in 2009

Tomato imports into Paraguay totalled 19,203 tonnes in 2009, more than three times the volume of tomatoes imported in 2008 (5,014 tonnes), according to data released by the Paraguayan Plant and Seed Quality and Health Service (SENAVE).

Established at the Saint-Charles International Market in Perpignan for a year, Suncrops France, Société Suncrops Maroc and its French partner Iber France have opened other markets these days. The Suncrops group are diversifying their tomato segment, producing cocktail tomatoes for the first year before moving on to further diversification in future years (e.g., peppers, beans and courgettes) and increasing their cultivation area from 130 ha to 190 ha this season.
